Hidden Flower

By Auctor, Stonehill College

In a quiet garden, under the moonlit sky,
He comes to me, but never stays long.
He speaks of my petals, my scent, my grace,
Until the sun rises, and he turns his face.

He loves her in the daylight, as it should be,
Telling others of her beauty and wearing her scent,
Showing off to the world his favorite flower,
So all may know that he is hers.

But in the dark, when all lingering eyes have gone,
He spends his time with me, and then I am his.
But when the moon fades, so does my glow,
And by morning, I’m just someone he used to know.

A quiet moment, and then he’s gone,
A brief love, but not a gentle pain.
I remain in the shadows, his secret bloom,
Just a stolen moment gone too soon.

He keeps coming back, again and again,
I open up, even knowing the end.
I wait, though it hurts, I can feel my heart sting,
His promises are empty, but I keep listening.

One night, while he admired my bloom,
He stayed a little longer to trace my petals.
The air was sweet, and the night long,
But soon again he was gone,
And this time there was nothing of me left, nothing to hold on.

Now it’s silence, no more calls,
Just me alone in this garden.
The moon fades, the shadows pull away,
And in the quiet, I fade away with the day.
