Mountains of Laurel

By Nicholas Tarquino

In the mountains and winding wood
A mighty path has stood
To climb up through the mist
Though the path may turn and twist
Mountain laurels and stout trees line the path
While mighty rocks form a stalwart rath
The music of the world abounds
To the call of nature’s sounds
Let the birds sing their songs
Maybe a deer will come along
Make sure to know which way to go
Higher and higher as the world drops below
A small outcrop provides a view
A valley of green and a sky of blue
Sun burning bright
Clearing the mist from sight
Further upward to the top
View beholden forced to stop
Twisted creek between rolling hills
As the forest to the horizon fills
Beneath rock and stone lie caverns beyond compare
Of which many are unaware
Turn around and a sour sight behold
The world itself has been remold
In a clearing, no nature stands
Leaving only rock and sand
Towers of steel hum with power
It’s our Earth they devour
A town stretches to tilled fields
